Youth team beaten by Padiham

We should have been playing Bamber Bridge but they were struggling to field a side and so Padiham helped out at short notice.

The young Clarets dominated the game throughout but somehow managed to fall behind on 36 minutes with a scrambled goal. Shortly afterwards we looked to have equalised with a Paul Barratt shot from the left but the Padiham keeper made an excellent save.

The second half saw us make a number of substitutions, although not quite as many as Stan had made the night before. It was all to no avail though as Padiham somehow held onto their lead. The keeper made another couple of good saves and with some wayward shooting the young Clarets ended the game goalless. A 1-0 defeat but there were a lot of positives from the game.

We looked particularly good at the back with Jon Leary and Liam Eves in the centre with Andrew Leeson and Paul Scott at full back. This without skipper Earl Davis who has been very impressive in the previous games.

Stan would probably say that one swallow doesn’t make a summer but I just get the feeling that we are starting to turn it round at youth level. Hopefully we are and if so it is going to be a long hard slog to get it where we want to go. It might be a few years yet but hopefully one day we will have a system at this level again that provides the club with a steady supply of first team players.

The photograph with this report is of former Wigan, Chester and Rochdale manager Graham Barrow. Should you wonder why then just check out the Burnley team which was:

James Salisbury, Andrew Leeson, Paul Scott, Sean Blakey, Jon Leary, Liam Eves, Matthew O’Neill, Richard Chaplow, Damian Hindle, Paul Barratt, Andrew Waine. Subs: Mark Rasmussen, Steve Sinclair, James Barrow, Brian Fogarty, Robert Grimes.
