Bury had started the day on top of the league but could only sit and watch as Walsall's late winner against the young Clarets at Gawthorpe took them to the top for the first time this season.
For years our fixture has been the first to be called off with any threat of rain usually causing Gawthorpe to be declared waterlogged if not flooded, but we are now seeing the benefit of the early work that has been done there with our game going ahead despite the dreadful weather we experienced leading up to the game.
It's proving to be a difficult season for the youth team, the first without Terry Pashley at the helm for over two decades, but we were close to getting our first point since beating bottom club Morecambe at the end of September.
The other two games played saw Shrewsbury, one time leaders, held to a 1-1 draw by Wrexham while Tranmere, up there all season, suffered another defeat, this time going down 1-0 at home to Preston who are our next opponents.
Tranmere made a blistering start to the season, winning seven of their first eight games, but they've lost three of their last four games including an FA Youth Cup exit at the hands of Carlisle.
Preston, meanwhile, are very much the team in form. After a difficult start they've recovered and the win against Tranmere, courtesy of a wonder strike from Jonathan Lunney ten minutes from time, was their fifth consecutive league win which has lifted them to eighth in the table after they'd made a disastrous start.
