Spicer joined Southend last summer after a successful pre-season trial and was featuring in the team regularly until October but having lost his place he was unable to get it back and made only one more league appearance.
He didn't feature at all when Brown replaced Paul Sturrock as manager and his departure has come as no surprise.
It's five years since he left Turf Moor, released by Owen Coyle at the end of the 2007/08 season. The former Arsenal and Bournemouth midfielder went on to play for Doncaster, Leyton Orient and Notts County before arriving at Roots Hall.
Now aged 29, he's on the lookout for a new club still short of having started 150 career league games.
