Reserves beat Oldham at Mossley, or was it Stalybridge?

To actually get to the game for some meant a chase around Greater Manchester to the east of the city. The game had been advertised by our club as taking place at Stalybridge Celtic, via the official club web site. In fact after we have all made it home the club site still shows the same information.
Thankfully due to the Oldham site and ourselves here at Claretsmad getting the change of venue on our sites during the afternoon and then through the wonders of the mobile phone a good number of Clarets fans did make it to the correct venue, Seel Park the home of Mossley.

It was a very inexperienced reserve team, which included a trialist called Mark Rasmussen. All efforts to find anything about him failed and even our assistant manager Sam Ellis admitted to not knowing where he had come from.

We did make a good start however and almost grabbed the lead with a superb chip from Andrew Waine on 18 minutes, which left the goalkeeper beaten, but just went over the bar. We didn’t have to wait long however to take the lead and a couple of minutes later were 1-0 up with a goal from Andrew Leeson. Within three minutes and it was the turn of Rasmussen to try a chip and this he did superbly as again the keeper was beaten from some 30 yards but this time it went in for 2-0.

The rest of the first half saw the young Clarets well on top against an Oldham side under the charge of former Claret Tony Philliskirk (pictured).

At half time the players went in for a chat and a cup of tea whilst most of the supporters made their way to Mossley’s excellent bar where half time was spent over a pint, pie chips and peas and for the more energetic a game of snooker.

Out into the cold again for the second half and there had been a big change. It had now become dark and the floodlights were, shall we say, somewhat inadequate. We positioned ourselves close to the penalty area that Oldham were defending which fortunately meant we did see most of the action. Rasmussen left the field on 65 minutes after taking a knock to be replaced by local lad Paul Barratt. We dominated the second half and the only surprise was the fact that we only added one more goal, excellently taken by John Williamson on 70 minutes which completed the scoring at 3-0. The nearest we came after that was from Michael Devenney on 77 minutes but Oldham managed to scramble it clear.

In a week when things have been a whole lot rosier around Turf Moor this was another excellent all round performance and another excellent result.

The team tonight was: Salisbury, Leeson, Pilkington, Scott, E Davis, Boardman, Waine, Kevan, Williamson, Devenney, Rasmussen (Barratt 65). The unused subs were Paxton, Hindle, Eves and O’Neill.
