Win takes youth team up to fifth

We started the day in sixth place and moved up one place with the win. That would have been two places had Carlisle been able to beat Port Vale. It could have been the case too even though Carlisle did find themselves two goals behind in the second half.

They managed to pull things back to 3-3 and missed a host of second half chances that would have seen them move further up the table. The point did see them climb from their position next to bottom of the league, previously just above Preston on goal difference.

Rochdale won the other league game and that's taken them back within a point of leaders Blackpool although the Seasiders, who have a 100% record, again have two games in hand.

That Rochdale netted four goals was pleasing for coach Chris Beech who saw his side fail to score for the first time a week earlier in the cup at Notts County before winning 10-9 on penalties after both sides had taken 12 spot kicks each.

'Dale are the league's leading scorers with 26 goals, six more than the Clarets who are next. However, only Morecambe had conceded more than their 15. That's a total of 41 goals in 8 games they've been involved in.

Elsewhere there were the remainder of the cup games with two more of the North West Conference teams going through. Bury missed their chance last Monday in losing to Hull but both Macclesfield and Wigan came through their ties against Doncaster and Rotherham.

The revised draw for the second round (Northern section) is:

Preston v Carlisle
Stockport v Rochdale
Walsall v Oldham
Wigan v Grimsby
Darlington v Tranmere
Hull v Morecambe
Burnley v Blackpool
Accrington v Macclesfield

Those ties will be played on Saturday 30th October.

We're next in action this coming Saturday when we face Carlisle. The game was initially scheduled for Gawthorpe but the fixtures have been switched and will now be at Carlisle.
