Preston and Oldham, along with Wrexham and Macclesfield, were all four points behind the Clarets' second string at the beginning of this week. Macclesfield had no game and when Burnley beat Wrexham 4-1 it meant it would be either Preston or Oldham who would close the gap, or both if they drew.

Oldham grabbed the lead after just twelve minutes last night through Ryan Brooke but North End were level within three minutes when trialist Vladislav Mirchev struck. The second half got more difficult for the Latics on the hour when they had Filipe Morais dismissed for violent conduct but it looked as though they would hold out for a draw.

That was until the fourth minute of stoppage time when Barry Nicholson, making his second appearance on return from injury, latched on to a knock down and scored from close range to give Preston the points and second place in the league.

It's cup week next week and we've no game the following week either when there are four league games. With Preston the other team not playing, no matter what happens we'll still have our four point lead with games in hand.
