Port Vale close the gap

Blackpool were assured top place even if they had played and lost, but their five point lead was always going to be cut with the two clubs closest to them playing each other. Vale it was who were winners, by the narrowest of margins, and it is they who are now just two points off the top.

The team to watch right now is Rochdale. They picked up a point at Burnley a week earlier but the side who finished second last year gave the current champions something of a pasting. The 5-0 scoreline was the biggest win of the day and for Preston, whose first team suffered that late reverse at Burnley, it wasn't the best of days.

They are struggling so far this season and are currently just above the bottom two, Macclesfield and Tranmere. Macc picked up a point in a high scoring game against Walsall and that meant Tranmere dropped into bottom place after a heavy defeat at Stockport.

Bury and Wigan were the other winners and Burnley's defeat against Oldham has seen them drop to tenth place in the table, although a win would have seen us in fourth place. There were high hopes this season but with just one win in four games to date we need to start showing our form soon. There would be no better time than next Saturday when we play host to Preston at Gawthorpe.

Preston coming to Burnley - I bet they are really looking forward to that!
