Two Clarets to remember Battle of the Somme

Alex Cisak was in good form

The two players are goalkeeper Alex Cisak and right-back Luke O'Neill. Both are currently on loan at Leyton Orient who announced over the weekend that, for the remainder of the season, their shirts would carry the Clapton Orient Somme badge to remember those who lost their lives in the World War I battle.

There were 41 players and staff from the club who served their country as part of the 17th Battalion Middlesex Regiment (the Footballers' Battalion) with three of them losing their lives.

Tom Jeffers, the club's Head of Commercial, said: "Leyton Orient Football Club is steeped in history and I am absolutely delighted to be able to incorporate the Somme badge on the first team and replica shirts for the remainder of the 2014/15 season.

"As the first football club to sign up en masse in the Footballers' Battalion it is very important that we remember our past and those who lost their lives."

On the pitch, Leyton Orient are very much in a fight for survival at the bottom of League One but they did their cause no harm on Saturday with a 3-1 home win against Port Vale, and this after trailing 1-0 at half time.

It could have been worse, but Cisak is reported to have had an excellent game which gave Fabio Liverani's team the platform to come back after the break following a red card for Vale's goalkeeper Chris Neal.

They were joined by Marvin Bartley in the side, the former Claret is more often used as a substitute, but Luke O'Neill didn't finish the game having been forced off with an injury just over twenty minutes from the end.

It was also a winning start for Steven Hewitt, albeit as a substitute on his debut for Southport. They too had the benefit of Torquay's Luke Young being shown a red card, this one early in the game, but by then Southport were already in front.

Hewitt came on for Luke George with 16 minutes remaining and while on the pitch, Torquay equalised before Southport scored a winner from Paul Smith.

It's Hewitt's second loan spell in the Conference. Two seasons ago he featured 15 times for Alfreton, scoring one goal in a 3-2 win against Gateshead.

With Danny Lafferty on international duty, only one other Burnley player was in league action and that takes us to Friday night's League Two game between Accrington and Newport.

Jason Gilchrist was again named as a substitute and it was a brief appearance, coming on for Matt Crooks in a 2-0 defeat. It's his third appearance, all of which have come from the bench.
