Three of the top six lose and all of the bottom three win

Last updated : 24 February 2014 By Tony Scholes

It really is so tight up there at the top now. Leicester remain eight points clear of us but our lead over Derby remains just two points with them due at Turf Moor in five days time. Below that we've got a bit of breathing space, and it is no more than that, over QPR and Forest but QPR do have a game in hand.

QPR lost at Charlton so Harry Redknapp could go looking at the loan market again; if not his counterpart Billy Davies has confirmed that's where his Forest are likely to be heading as they desperately need reinforcements to bolster a squad that must be down to its last thirty players by now.

Reading could lose their place in the top six should Wigan win their game in hand. They've picked up 27 points from 13 games since Uwe Rösler became manager and they are the only team in the Championship, to date, with more February points than us.

Interestingly I was asked last week if we were now mathematically safe from relegation. I don't know the answer to that; I don't know whether a freak set of results, including us losing our last 14, would see us go down, but it was a daft question. We will most certainly not be playing in League One next season.

Who will be? Not for the first time this season the bottom three all recorded wins. Yeovil must be totally brassed off to have come off having won to find that they are still bottom of the league because both Charlton and Barnsley have done likewise.

It has certainly dragged a few more in to the equation. I remain certain that Bolton won't be in any trouble come the end of the season but Blackpool might just be if they continue the way they are going.

They are dropping like the proverbial stone and have now won just four points out of the last 45. It's incredible to think they went into December in fourth place in the league and looked a real promotion threat.

Still, they reverted to type on Saturday with another red card. That's ten this season, four more than next worst Millwall.

But it is the top of the league that concerns us. My looking at the bottom of the table is not anything like as important as we started to think it was a year ago. Then we'd just started that horror run of home performances under the lights.

What a difference a year makes. We've still got a hell of a lot to do but I don't think anyone outside the current top five will now be threatening the top two positions come May.

We've still got some performances to give and some results to get if we want to remain where we are.

Derby are closest and they've just come out of a good week with two late goals giving them two 1-0 wins against Sheffield Wednesday and Bournemouth. It's going to be an interesting game against them next week.

That fixture is below with the rest of the week's fixtures, coming after Saturday's result and stats, the leading goalscorers, the red and yellow card counts and the highest and lowest attendances.
