Charlie Austin is preparing for the play-offs with QPR |
In the first game yesterday Leicester beat QPR. Harry's promotion favourites were mathematically out of the chase for the top two once we'd won at Blackpool and this team now looks to be one in total disarray.
They were beaten 1-0 to a David Nugent goal at the King Power, a result that surely will ensure Leicester will be champions, and in doing so had Benoit Assou-Ekotto sent off with the commentary team on Sky all but suggested he wanted to be sent off.
So one ex-Claret scored, the other was nowhere to be seen on the pitch. Charlie Austin has been back recently with two substitute appearances and a start but he wasn't fit enough for this one although Redknapp expects him to return tomorrow.
Austin will be hoping to be fit enough for the play-offs. They need only one more point to be guaranteed a place in the end of season games and Burnley fans will be hoping that very soon another former Claret, Lee Grant, will have his play-off place confirmed with Derby.
I'll be amazed if Wigan don't retain their place in the top six, albeit without Chris McCann, so that leaves the chase for the last place.
Brighton, despite only drawing at Huddersfield, currently occupy it but they got some fantastic help from Reading and Ipswich who both lost. They are both a point behind Brighton whilst Nottingham Forest, winners for the first time since mid-February, and Bournemouth, who lost at home to ten man Sheffield Wednesday, are a further two points behind.
Clarets Mad would prefer not to consider any other teams right now but both Blackburn and Watford do seem to think they still have a good chance of making it.
Now, down at the bottom, and my recent thoughts of it being three from Charlton, Millwall, Barnsley and Yeovil are now looking to be anything but accurate.
Millwall haven't won a home game since mid-January, and, ultimately, that could cost them their place in the Championship. Maybe, just maybe, they much prefer to play away from the hostile atmosphere of the Den.
They might not have won at home in over three months but they won at Derby on the second Saturday in March then, having lost against struggling teams such as Blackpool and Leeds away, have just won three consecutive away games at Forest, Wigan and Middlesbrough
It's taken them level on points with Doncaster, a team who have lost their last four games, and a point above both Charlton and Blackpool.
Blackpool it is who have dropped into the relegation positions; Charlton lead them on goal difference and with a game in hand. The two meet on the final day of the season at Bloomfield Road and that could be the decider as to who goes down with Barnsley and Yeovil. I remain convinced that those two will be relegated.
Blackpool v Charlton. Will there be any tennis balls or tangerines on the pitch? Will the Oystons be bringing their own racket again? Will Bob Malcolm be on the touchline? Will he even remain employed by the Seasiders?
There's a lot still to be decided but it's good looking down right now as a supporter of Lancashire's number one team.
