Six clubs still with no new players

Last updated : 29 June 2011 By Tony Scholes

By now I think most fans expected the squad to have changed a bit since that day with some players leaving and new ones coming in. As it stands right now that's not happened; other than the players released there have been no changes whatsoever either in or out.

Added to that there are still three players - Wes Fletcher, Alex MacDonald and Chris McCann - who are still to sign the new deals offered to them by Burnley. All three are expected to be at training tomorrow and it wouldn't be a big surprise to hear that all three have signed their new contracts.

It's unlikely Jack Cork will be there. He's back at Chelsea, certainly for now, and they don't restart training until next week so I suppose he could even pop back to Marbella for some more nightclub photographs.

It is no secret that Eddie Howe would like him back in our claret and blue shirt next season, but there are a number of other managers would like him at their club too. I've been reasonably confident all summer that he'd come back, and I've not lost that confidence as yet. If he's not in the squad for the Watford game then I might start to have my doubts.

All round it's been a quietish summer for Championship clubs. Derby are currently leading the way with seven new signings, although three of them ended last season on loan at Pride Park, and they are followed by Barnsley who have completed six signings since Keith Hill became one of six new Championship managers since the 2010/11 season drew to a close.

Quietish? Just 45 transfers into the 24 Championship clubs which is less than two per club right now and I'm not sure how many of those I'd have got excited about had they been our signings - not many is about right.

Blackpool made their first singing today; that of former Manchester United player Bojan Djordic from Videotron and that leaves Coventry, Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest, Reading and Southampton besides ourselves looking for that first new signing.

We'll all make them and I am sure there will be comings and goings at Turf Moor before the season gets underway and Eddie Howe will be able to add to his first two signings, those of Charlie Austin (pictured) and Marvin Bartley. How soon? Tomorrow some have suggested but there is no evidence to suggest that just yet.

Eddie Howe has declared that he will have his squad in place by the time we kick off so we might just have an interesting five weeks or so in front of us.
