Referee Scott kicks off new career at Turf Moor

Last updated : 16 October 2015 By Tony Scholes

Despite not having been given a Premier League game since, Scott was appointed to the Select Group of Referees in June this year and will launch his career as a professional referee tomorrow, having not taken charge of a game since the end of last season.

Tomorrow will be his sixth Burnley game and the most unlikely statistic from his previous games is that he failed to yellow card any of our players in two of them. There were no cards at all when we won 1-0 at Ipswich in October 2013 and only two at Bournemouth in the following February, both home players, although I'm sure no one in the ground that day will ever understand how Brett Pitman wasn't sent off.

He's managed to total 24 yellow cards and one red card, Coventry's  Gael Bigirimana, in his other four Burnley games and that's a bit more like the Scott who has been refereeing in the Football League since August 2008, a season he kicked off with seven red cards in his first 17 games.

Having not refereed a game this season, his last game was the League Two play-off game between Southend and Stevenage last season at Roots Hall. There were seven yellow cards in that game and his last Championship game was on the last day of last season when Ipswich's Cole Skuse and Jay Tabb were both yellow carded in a 3-2 defeat at Blackburn.

I thought he had a disappointing game last season in our draw against Villa and he had an absolute shocker at Coventry in 2011. Other than that, despite his desire to wave yellow cards at times, he's not done too badly.

The assistant referees tomorrow are Constantine Hatzidakis (Kent) and Matthew Wilkes (West Midlands). The fourth official is Football League referee Seb Stockbridge (Tyne & Wear) who is still to referee a Burnley game.

Hatzidakis was the assistant referee who wasn't able to see the two clear penalties at Leeds on the opening day of the season, but he and Wilkes were both on the line when we won at Ewood in March 2014.
