Redfearn, who had previously held caretaker roles with Halifax and York, was in charge of Leeds during last season. He'd three times been caretaker manager at Elland Road but took charge from October 2014 to the end of the season before the axe fell as it had done quickly on the three managers before him.

He had a long playing career which saw him make over 850 league appearances from the Premier League down the Conference which ended in 2010 with his last league appearance in May 1=2004 at the age of 38.

Now 50, he was the candidate who most impressed Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart who had dispensed with the services of Evans with the pair wishing to go in different directions.

It's the second change in the Championship since the start of the season, with Lee Carsley having replaced Marinus Dijkhuizen at Brentford at the end of September.
