Pompous set for return with Posh

That was the case recently when Geoffrey Richmond, Mr. Pompous of Bradford, announced he was leaving the stricken club after it had survived a summer in administration. He was the man who had presided over the club as it got itself into debts of around £35 million and he was the man who would have been held responsible had the club gone out of business.

On his departure he said, "I have always said if such a day arrived when I lost the confidence of a significant number of the supporters of this club that it would be the right thing for me to walk away. I believe that time has now arrived."

Of course his only concern is the future of Bradford City and despite his departure that concern will surely remain with him. After all he is loyal to the club even though previously he had been chairman of Scarborough.

So with no future for him at Valley Parade and because of his loyalty to the club that is the end of Mr. Pompous in football – or is it? Apparently not, and the rumours are strong that he could be set for a return to the game less than a fortnight after his loyalty pleas and departure from Bradford. According to weekend speculation he looks set to take control of Peterborough United.

I just hope the 2nd Division club know what they are letting themselves in for. Pompous and Fry, an unlikely double act but having worked for Stan Flashman I’m sure Barry Fry would probably cope with Mr. Pompous. I just hope for the sake of football that he doesn’t have to.
