Penny drops again in Peru

The qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup FInals in Russia will get underway in Europe next season and England travel to Slovakia for the first of their qualifying games in early September.

But the World Cup is already underway in other parts of the world; David Edgar has already played in three qualification games for Canada, one against Dominica and two against Belize, although yesterday he was an unused substitute in their latest game, a 1-0 home win against Honduras in Vancouver.

Those games are in the North and Central America section but games are also being played in three other regions including South America and that's exactly where the Penny dropped last night when former Burnley goalkeeper Diego Penny, now playing his club football for Sporting Cristal in Peru, returned to the side.

He's been in and out of the squad in recent times but hadn't played an international for 25 months. In October 2013 he played in two qualifiers for the last World Cup. He was in the Peru side that lost 3-1 against Argentina in Buenos Aires and four days later kept his place for a 1-1 draw against Bolivia in Lima.

Peru lost their opening two game in the qualifying campaign last month, going down 2-0 to Columbia in Barranquilla and 4-3 against Chile in Lima. That led to Pedro Gallese being left out last night and Penny coming in for game number three.

He kept a clean sheet too as Peru won 1-0 against Paraguay in Lima. He's expected to keep his place for the away game against Brazil next week in Salvador, Bahia.

It was his performance against Brazil in November 2007 that Owen Coyle saw on a DVD. He turned in a performance that persuaded the then Burnley boss to bring him to Turf Moor.

The INTERNATIONALS feature has been updated to include Penny's appearance.
