Penn back at the Madejski

Last updated : 01 October 2004 By Tony Scholes

West Midlands based referee Andy Penn was in charge of his first ever Burnley game in February when we drew 2-2 with Reading and he had an excellent first game, allowed it to flow and didn’t once pull a yellow card out of his pocket.

Not as though he has got over excited this season with the cards either so far, in fact just thirteen cards in eight games and no sign of a red card.

Last season he was hardly the busiest of referees and in 34 games he only issued 96 yellows and 4 reds which was way below the average.

It is rare that a referee gets the same fixture two seasons in succession but Phil Joslin has had the Ipswich v Burnley game in the last two seasons and had excellent games on both occasions.

Hopefully Penn will follow up his good performance at the Madejski last season with something similar tomorrow and there seems to be no evidence to suggest otherwise.

He will be assisted by Gary Evetts (Hertfordshire) and Steve Rubery (Essex).
