New ref Bankes in charge at Rotherham

Bankes, from Merseyside, is in only his second season as a Football League referee although he did take charge of one game during the 2013/14 season.

He's been described as card happy and he's certainly not a referee to shy away from using his cards. Last season he averaged over three and a half yellows per game and sent off seven players in his 27 games.

In April of last season there were no cards in a 2-2 draw between Colchester and Scunthorpe. That proved to be his only game to date that has been card free, but it didn't hold him back and he refereed the League Two Play-Off semi-final 1st leg between Plymouth and Wycombe at Home Park.

One thing not too high was the number of Championship games. He got just two last season although this season five of his ten games have been in our league.

He's been busy with the cards again. He kicked off the season with nine yellows in Birmingham's home win against Reading and in total he's handed out 42 of them in the ten games. Of those, 20 have gone to home team players and 22 to away team players.

His last game was the 2-2 draw between Ipswich and Bristol City last Saturday. Ipswich didn't have any players carded but he yellow carded City's Nathan Baker, Marlon Pack and Aaron Wilbraham.

I'm not sure what to expect, but his record suggests the two teams will be fortunate to avoid getting some cards.

The assistant referees are James Mainwaring (Lancashire) and David Plowright (Nottinghamshire). The fourth official is Football League referee Mark Heywood (Cheshire) whose last Burnley game was our 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest in December 2012.
