More Marney

It is, in effect, one further year guaranteed for Marney whose previous contract was due to end next summer and, as he makes his way back from a cruciate injury, it's a further boost to the team and the supporters that he is staying beyond this season.

"I'm over the moon to secure my future for the next couple of years," he said. "I love it here. if it was for five years to stay here, then I would have signed that. I've said from day one, it's a great club and the last few years have been great years for myself personally and for the club, so I obviously just want to be a part of the future and I'm really looking forward to the next two seasons."

Marney joined the Clarets in the summer of 2010 after relegation from the Premier League. He'd come down with us with Hull but was one of Brian Laws' signings that summer as he looked to build a squad capable of a return.

It took four years, and two changes of manager, before he and we made it back to the big league but his season was halted with the cruciate injury in the home game against West Brom last February. We were 2-0 up at the time he suffered it and went on to draw the game 2-2.

It was his 188th game in Burnley colours and I'm sure we all eagerly await number 189, but when will that be?

He's back playing and scored in a development squad game against Man City before having a setback which has ruled him out since, but he said of his rehabilitation back to the first team: "It's progressing really well. I'm quite a bit ahead of where I thought I was going to be at this time.

"I had a tiny little setback which has maybe added on a week or so, but I'm hopefully playing a game next week and then crack on from there. I want to put myself in a position where the gaffer sees me and says right, he's ready and then crack on from there really."

It's certainly looking as though he'll be back sooner rather than later. When he suffered the injury he was a regular alongside David Jones in the midfield but, with Joey Barton getting closer to a first team call and Fredrik Ulvestad on the way back, he'll be returning to a much stronger squad.

But it's superb news to hear that he's edging closer to a return and that he's committed to the Clarets for a further year.

It leaves us with only four members of the first team squad who are out of contract at the end of this season - Barton, Michael Duff, Matt Gilks and Matt Taylor.
