Midfielders were in charge as Clarets beat Charlton

Last updated : 24 December 2015 By Tony Scholes

It was a game where the top four in each were the same and three midfielders were in that top four alongside right-back Matt Lowton who was making his first start for us after two substitute appearances.

Making his first Turf Moor appearance since February, when he suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in the 2-2 draw against West Brom, Dean Marney was preferred to David Jones alongside Joey Barton and the new midfield two were in outstanding form, particularly once we'd gone in front just before half time.

Marney won the man of the match with 33.7% of the vote and not far behind him was Barton who secured a 32.6% share. Lowton was the only other player to reach double figures; he was able to take third place with 11.6% while Scott Arfield was in fourth place with 6.6% of the vote.

Not only were those four players also the top four in the player ratings but they were in the same order. After the dreadfully low ratings from the Middlesbrough game it was refreshing to see sevens and eights again; Marney and Barton being the two to go over the eight. Marney had a rating of 8.43 out of 10 with Barton on 8.27 not too far behind.

Lowton's first ever player rating was 7.73 and Arfield was just below him on 7.52 out of ten as they again took third and fourth places.

The points awarded towards the Clarets Mad Player of the Year are ten to Marney, six to Barton, four to Lowton and two to Arfield.

That has made it very interesting at the top with Barton now just three points behind leader Michael Keane. Tendayi Darikwa, out of the side for the first time, remains in third place but is now nine points behind Barton.

The Boxing Day vote for the Hull game will commence on Saturday evening within an hour of the final whistle. It will run until the end of Tuesday, as is normal for a Saturday game, and will immediately be followed by the vote for Monday's home game against Bristol City with this vote running from Wednesday to Friday. The normal schedule will then return for the Ipswich game on Saturday 2nd January 2016.
