Mahon departs Tranmere

Mahon left the Clarets in the summer of 2009 after our promotion to the Premier League. It was no real surprise for a player who had featured only as a substitute during that season and had even spent a short time out on loan at Blackpool.

In early July of that year he returned to his first club Tranmere Rovers on a three year contract, but an injury curtailed his first season to just 12 starts and 8 substitute appearances. He didn't start a league game after October.

Last season he didn't play at all and, with one year remaining on that contract, they have agreed to part company.

It wasn't easy for Tranmere and manager Les Parry said on breaking the news: "I'm sorry to see Alan leave Tranmere Rovers and this has been the hardest decision I've had to make since taking over as manager.

"After a long and amicable discussion with Alan we both agreed that it would be in the interest of Tranmere and Alan that we parted company.

"I picked up Alan from the airport when he first came over from Ireland as a fresh faced 15-year-old and we have developed a great friendship. I wish him well in whatever he decides to do."

Mahon, one tipped to be Burnley's Jewel in the Crown, said: "I'm sad to leave the club as it's been such a big part of my life, but it's the best thing for me and Tranmere that we part ways at this time as it will allow the manager to bring in new talent.

"Tranmere will always have a special place in my heart as it's the club I began my career at and where I made many friends. I wish everyone at the club the best of luck in the future and I'm sure I'll be back to visit and watch the team."
