League career looks over for Vinnicombe

Vinnicombe, who joined Burnley for Wycombe Wanderers when Stan arrived at Turf Moor six years ago, has been released by Tony Adams and at 33 has decided to call time on his full time football.

It is a rapid fall from grace after being Player of the Season at Wycombe just two years ago but Adams wants to rebuild after suffering relegation. And that means an opportunity for Chris to return for his native Devon to play with Tiverton Town.

He said, “I'm coming down to train with the club and have a chat with manager Martyn Rogers to see what's what. I've spoken to my wife and we think it's time to come home now.

“I've spent 16 years in the Football League and I'm not getting any younger, so I thought 'why not try going part-time somewhere closer to home?' It's the right time to move on and have a new challenge - hopefully Tiverton will be that challenge."

He started his career with his home town club Exeter City and captained the England Under-21 team before moving to Scotland to sign for Rangers. His next stop was Turf Moor, a Jimmy Mullen signing following the play off win in the summer of 1994.

He made 95 league appearances for the Clarets in four seasons and that despite one season where he hardly featured under the management of Adrian Heath.

And after a total of 398 league appearances in England and Scotland he now looks set to bring it to an end for a return home and football in the Dr Marten’s League.
