It's Friend again for Preston

Last updated : 04 December 2015 By Tony Scholes

On that occasion he upset visiting manager Darren Ferguson for sending off Billy Jones, giving him a second yellow card for time wasting with them leading 3-1, and the game turned upside down after that with Burnley scoring three times to win 4-3.

We've had our problems with him and three away games in a year stand out, a defeat at Wolves followed by a win at Watford in 2007 and then the 4-2 win at QPR when Andrew Cole got a hat trick. He was poor in all three games.

He was fine when he refereed us three times last season in the Premier League but he blew the whistle to start our season back in August at Leeds and only he will know why we didn't get two penalties.

Born in Bristol, the now 44 year old Friend is based in Leicestershire and became a Football League referee in 2003; his first game being a 2-1 away win for Bristol Rovers at Scunthorpe in August of that year.

It was at Norwich in January of that season that he refereed his first game at Championship (then called Division One) level, a game which away team Bradford City won 1-0.

He had to wait until September 2009 for his first Premier League game. It was at Molineux in a game Wolves won 2-1 against Fulham, and he's been a Select Group referee ever since. The one Burnley game he refereed that season, at home to Birmingham, was his second top flight game.

This season, since our game at Leeds, this will be his third Championship game whilst he's also refereed one League One fixture.

He's refereed a total of 11 games in 2015/16 in which there have been 37 yellow and four red cards. Of those yellows, 19 have gone to home team players with 18 to away team players.

He sent off both Philippe Coutinho and Mark Noble in West Ham's 3-0 win at Liverpool. Sunderland's Younes Kaboul was dismissed in their 2-0 loss at Bournemouth as was Stoke's former Burnley loanee Phil Bardsley in their 1-1 home draw against Chelsea.

In his last game, Bournemouth's home draw against Everton last week, there were two players yellow carded. They were Bournemouth's Charlie Daniels and Dan Gosling.

Kevin Friend is currently 35th in RATE THE REF with a rating of 62.74 out of 10.

The assistant referees are Andrew Halliday (North Yorkshire) and Mark Dwyer (West Yorkshire). The fourth official is Football League referee David Webb (County Durham) who last refereed us in our home win against Brentford in August.
