Harrington back to referee Reading game

Last updated : 25 September 2015 By Tony Scholes

He'd done OK at York in the Capital One Cup tie earlier in the season, albeit not a difficult game to referee, but he made the Doncaster game difficult for himself with a series of bad decisions in a dreadful performance, none more so than two penalties when he failed to give us one that was clear before awarding us a penalty that was a very soft award.

Harrington was in his second season as a Football League referee when he refereed those two previous games. He hit the headlines during the 2012/13 season when he sent off players in five of six consecutive games but has since been more sparing with that colour of card and last season sent off only one player in 32 games.

In terms of yellow cards, he averaged around three per game last season and this season he's got off to a similar start with eleven yellow cards in four games. Just three of those have gone to home team players with eight to away team players.

He continues to referee mainly in the lower divisions although this will be his second Championship game of the season, the previous one being the Fulham v Blackburn game when he was slated by Gary Bowyer for not spotting a ball crossing the line from his position on the pitch.

He yellow carded five players that day. Jamie O'Hara was the only Fulham player carded alongside the four Blackburn players Grant Hanley, Shane Duffy, Jordan Rhodes and Fode Koita.

I've seen him just the twice and not sure what to expect from him, but hoping for a much better performance than on his last visit to Turf Moor.

The assistant referees are Barry Cropp (Lancashire) and Alan Clayton (Cheshire). The fourth official is Football League referee Darren Bond (Lancashire) who is still to referee a Burnley game.
