Glen is 90s star

Based on the message board nominations that set the fifteen candidates for the vote, it always looked as though it was going to be a four horse race but in the end those four - Steve Davis, David Eyres, Glen Little and Andy Payton - were all separated by some distance.

Glen it was on top with no less than 35.3% of the vote. He was an Adrian Heath signing from Glentoran who finally established himself in the team during the second half of the following season when Chris Waddle was in charge.

Brilliant at his best, he was also very frustrating, but he couldn't have ended the ten seasons in the decade any better than scoring that promotion winning clincher at Scunthorpe. Heath signed Little but the other three players in the top four were all signed by different managers.

David Eyres, brought to Burnley from Blackpool in the summer of 1993 by Jimmy Mullen, was without doubt the top player in the promotion season.

Always popular with the Burnley fans, as he was at Preston and Oldham after he'd left Turf Moor in 1997, and probably his first season was his best as he plundered not far short of 20 league goals. He took second place with a 20.9% share of the vote.

if it's goals you want then look no further than Waddle's best signing, Andy Payton. His signing was crucial to our survival that season and there are no doubts that his goals kept us up, as they did the following season. His 27 league goal haul in the 1999/2000 season were without doubt a major factor in our promotion.

Payts won 17.2% of the vote to take third place whilst the next place went to Steve Davis. He was in all three promotion teams during the decade, captaining the third one in 2000. He was signed twice too, once by Frank Casper and then by Stan Ternent.

He won just 10.4% of the vote. I'd expected him to do better but maybe his keen willingness to walk out on the club had an effect on voters.

They were always going to be the top four in a decade that really did see Burnley progressing again with those three promotions, ending the decade two divisions higher than we started it.
