Gills fail in Gifton move

Gillingham have made a disappointing start to the season and are currently just one place above the drop zone after winning just one of their first five league games. That prompted Jepson to look to strengthen his squad and last week he approached Burnley in the hope of taking Gifton on loan.

“We tried to sign on loan last week, but we couldn't afford his wages,” Jepson said this morning, adding: “The supporters could tell me a million players to sign, but when it comes down to the financial package, it becomes a bit of a stumbling block.”

Brighton were keen to take the striker but the player opted against a move to the Withdean, not wanting to drop a division on a permanent basis and with him turning down the opportunity to go to Gillingham on loan it means he will be a Claret for a while longer.

He's been on the transfer list since the end of last season, even opted against going on the pre-season trip to Italy to get himself fixed up elsewhere and we recall his agent saying that there was keen interest from nine clubs.

In the last two league games he has been introduced as a substitute but his best chance of any regular first team football does look to be away from Turf Moor.
