Farewell to Preston as Swansea confirm play off place

Last updated : 27 April 2011 By Tony Scholes
That was the result of the Easter Monday games and things could have been much clearer had Reading not lost a two goal lead to lose 3-2 against Sheffield United. Even a draw for Reading would have seen their play off place and the Blades' relegation confirmed but both have to wait now.

It's simple at the bottom - for either Scunthorpe or Sheffield United to stay up they would have to win both remaining games whilst either Crystal Palace or Doncaster lose both theirs. Scunthorpe's plight is even worse in that they would have to turn round a massive goal difference disadvantage.

New manager Alan Knill has improved things, but Scunny will go down and Knill will come face to face with Bury, the club he left recently, after they clinched promotion.

Sheffield United have a slight chance but it is slight and I expect the Steel City derby to be in the third tier of English football next season for the first time in over 30 years.

Up at the top, QPR have not quite clinched the title yet but they will do and they will go up automatically with Norwich or Cardiff. Should it be Norwich it will be a second successive promotion.

The one that misses out will be in the play offs with Swansea and almost certainly Reading with that last place still very much up for grabs. Nottingham Forest just have to be clear favourites but Millwall, Burnley and Leeds are still in there.

Burnley will need to win on Saturday and if they do so that will end Leeds' hopes of a second successive promotion. It's tight, and if only we could have got a winner on Monday and if only Bristol City could have kept Forest out. A draw in our recent game at Forest would have been a very good result when you now look at the league table.

The Easter Monday results and stats are below along with the leading goalscorers, each club's disciplinary record and this weekend's fixtures.
