Eddie Howe hits out at new substitute rule

Last updated : 30 July 2011 By Tony Scholes

The announcement came nine days ago and Howe believes it will work against Burnley's policy to bring young players through at Turf Moor.

"It's going to be difficult for the players more than anybody," he said. "Having to only name five subs is going to leave a few out and in the stands which is never ideal."

More significantly, he said: "It is going to mean it's harder to bring young players through which I'm sure isn't why the rule was brought in. It's going to be much more difficult now for young players to make the bench."

Also adding their opposition to it today were fellow Championship managers Gus Poyet and Sven Goran Eriksson.

Poyet said: "The Football League was good enough to say early doors, 21st July, 20 days before the start of the league. That was embarrassing. It was unacceptable but they are the ones that are in charge.

"They don't have a clue how to make a squad. They don't have a clue how to make a bench, but they make a decision because they vote so we need to deal with it. I don't like it."

Eriksson doesn't like it either. "It will create problems for every manager and it's absolutely incredible to know that they decide this without asking the players, without asking the managers, without asking the players' union or the LMA," he said.

"I mean, we are going backwards, it's crazy."
