Dijkhuizen and Evans start the changes

Last updated : 28 September 2015 By Tony Scholes

This morning, Brentford revealed that they had parted company with their head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen and this afternoon came news that Rotherham had decided on a change and had sacked Steve Evans. They are, in so many ways, two different scenarios.

If I was a Brentford supporter I'd be very concerned at what was happening at my club. They are club that have just had a very good run, firstly under the management of Uwe Rösler and then, more so, with Mark Warburton in charge.

Having won promotion to the Championship in 2014, Brentford stunned the football world earlier this year when they announced that Warburton would be on his way along with both David Weir and Frank McParland, his trusted right hand men, this at a time when they were pushing for a second successive promotion.

No longer did they want a manager; they were hunting for someone who could play the stats game they were introducing. It took two people to replace McParland; in came Phil Giles and Rasmus Ankersen as co-directors of football, and they appointed Dijkhuizen in June.

Today, after just eight league games in charge, they've sacked him, along with his assistant Roy Hendriksen, and given the job to Lee Carsley who has been running their under-21 squad. Their chairman Cliff Crown, who looks a bit like a modern day Mr Pastry, has said the club has moved swiftly and decisively to appoint Carsley who has shown he is an outstanding leader.

Meanwhile, McParland is working at Burnley while both Warburton and Weir are in charge at Rangers, all probably thankful they are no longer involved at a club who are playing it like some computer game.

It's completely different at Rotherham. Evans has been there a little bit longer than three months. He replaced Andy Scott in April 2012 and was the Championship's longest serving manager. Like Brentford, Rotherham were promoted in 2014. They survived last season but had made a difficult start this time around.

They were bottom of the league and without a win until a week last Saturday but Evans has since guided them to two wins, against Cardiff at home and then at Birmingham and they are now a point clear of the relegation positions which are currently held by the three clubs promoted last season.

So the timing is a bit strange with Rotherham coming out with the usual notion that club and manager wished to head in different directions. When I read that, other than in the case of the Brentford farce, I always wonder whether it is club or manager who doesn't want to move upwards.

I've little time for Evans after the Boston situation but his exit will now leave Steve Bruce not just the Championship's longest serving manager but also the biggest manager.

Evans has left with his number two Paul Rayner with Eric Black, who was first team coach, taking over as caretaker for their game against us this weekend. Black once managed Coventry between 2003 and 2004. This will be his fifth caretaker position; he's carried out the same role at Birmingham, Sunderland, Blackburn and Wigan.

As for the action; the television coverage means I've seen three other games besides ours, the last of which was Middlesbrough's 3-0 win against Leeds yesterday. There was some comical defending from Leeds who might just have got back in at 2-1 had they not had a goal harshly disallowed for offside.

I have to say well done to their captain Sol Bamba. His attitude and reaction to the disallowed goal was spot on. He consulted with the referee, pushing his team mates away, and accepted the decision although I suspect he was seething.

As mentioned above, the relegation positions are currently occupied by the three clubs promoted. As for those who have come down from the Premier League; Hull and us are currently in the play-off positions while QPR are down in 12th place but only three points behind.

Having mentioned Bamba, there also has to be reference to QPR's Tjaronn Chery who was substituted with his team 3-0 down at Fulham in what is the closest Football League derby this season, the clubs just under three miles apart.

He didn't like it and walked off to leave his team mates to get on with things. He received applause from the away fans but his manager was clearly not happy with his attitude. "It's an internal matter, we'll deal with that when we get back to the club," blasted Ramsey who confirmed that Charlie Austin could be out for a while with a hamstring injury.

The news is worse though on Jamie Mackie. QPR have since confirmed that Mackie's hamstring injury, a significant tear, will keep him out for between eight to twelve weeks but that Austin, who sustained an acute muscle injury to his left hamstring, should be fit to return in four weeks time.

Austin, hardly surprisingly, is the league's leading goalscorer. He has six but has now been caught by Reading's Nick Blackman who scored the first against us on Saturday. He'll be a big miss for QPR of that there's no doubt.

There are two outstanding midweek games to be played this week. Brentford's home game against Birmingham should have been played on the night we were at Ipswich but was called off because either 1) they were laying a new pitch or 2) they hadn't learned the stats from the latest football game.

That will be played tomorrow as will Fulham's game against Wolves which, for reasons unknown, was put back from two weeks ago.

All the results from the weekend are below along with the stats, the leading goalscorers, each club's disciplinary record, the highest and lowest attendances and all this week's fixtures.
