Derbies, bubbles and Brighton still top

Last updated : 27 October 2015 By Tony Scholes

It was the second of three televised Championship games I saw over the weekend which started with Sheffield Wednesday's 2-1 win at Rotherham on Friday night and ended with the 0-0 draw between Cardiff and Bristol City last night which should, like the other two, have ended in an away win.

I thought Rotherham were poor in the South Yorkshire clash against Wednesday on Friday. The visitors were much the better side and this Rotherham side looked a lot poorer than the one we'd faced three weeks earlier.

As for last night's game; it's not the first time I've seen Bristol City fail to win a game they should have won. That's always a worrying scenario but that point at least keeps them a point clear of Charlton who currently occupy one of the three relegation places along with Rotherham and Bolton who have a further point less.

Charlton are the fourth and latest Championship club to say farewell to their manager since the season kicked off. Karel Fraeye has taken over from Guy Luzon on a temporary basis. The other three clubs to have made a switch are Brentford, Leeds and Rotherham. I suppose the only big surprise is that Leeds have, to date, only made one change.

There's certainly been a change in fortune at Brentford. Lee Carsley was handed the job when they sacked Marinus Dijkhuizen. Carsley lost his first two games in charge but has now won the last three, two of them away from home at Wolves and then at Charlton last Saturday.

Once we'd won at Blackburn we were guaranteed to end the weekend at least one place higher in the table with Hull and Birmingham facing each other. The winners in that game had to go back above us with Birmingham moving ahead of us in the case of a draw. It went Hull's way.

The big surprise was going above Reading, particularly given they were 2-0 up at Fulham in their game which kicked off an hour after our derby. But Fulham came back, ending a run of four games without a win, with four goals that left Reading on the wrong end of a scoreline for the first time since mid-September.

Brighton still lead the way. They have a four point lead over Hull and us now despite being held to a 0-0 draw by Preston. They remain unbeaten. I don't think many would have considered them to have promotion potential when the season kicked off and many expect them to drop. Exactly the same was said about us two years ago and look what happened there. Brighton might just be in this for the long haul.

On the subject of bubbles, I have to say I was disappointed with Dave Thomas in his recent article suggesting fans being herded like cattle. The supporters clubs have worked very hard to try and get some improvements and are currently running an Online Survey asking for the views of Burnley fans, those who did and those who didn't go. It is disappointing, and certainly not helpful, when someone who doesn't attend this fixture makes such comments.

Bristol City fans had a different situation. From what I can gather they were handed tokens rather than tickets for their game at Cardiff and had to exchange them for match tickets at a service station on the M4. They weren't subjected to coach travel but the restrictions were still very much unacceptable.

But the weekend review must end with a mention of our result - we went to Blackburn and won again.
