Andre Bikey - scored when we won at Barnsley |
Those wins have taken the two clubs out of the bottom three relegation positions that they would have otherwise been holding along with Doncaster. Watford's win dumped Reading in there, a side who have struggled since the sale of Shane Long to West Brom.
Joining them are Bristol City. They too have had a difficult start to the season and lost at home to Brighton with that maintaining the Sussex club's position at the top of the table with Southampton, promoted with them last May still second after they beat Nottingham Forest.
It's all gone quiet regarding Steve McClaren at Forest recently. He remains the bookies favourite to be the next Championship manager to lose his job but there seems to be every reason for the odds to be shortening regarding another former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson.
Sven goes where the money is, even if that is Notts County or Leicester, but he'll need to guarantee Premier League football next season. Already seven points behind the automatic places the pressure is building. They drew 1-1 at Barnsley on Saturday with Sven saying: "You have to be happy with that."
Sven - Brian Laws' Burnley won at Barnsley last season. It's hardly Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge.
Middlesbrough, West Ham, Derby and Cardiff are in the play off positions. Don't expect Derby to be there much longer. They got off to a flattering start but have, in their last two games, provided both Burnley and Coventry with their only wins. As for the others, you certainly wouldn't bet against Boro and the Hammers right now.
The weekend also saw the league's second and third hat tricks of the season. Rickie Lambert got all three in Southampton's 3-2 win against Forest on Saturday and Birmingham's 3-0 win versus Millwall yesterday, a game that saw Wade Elliott make his debut as a substitute, came courtesy of three Chris Wood goals.
Lambert's at the top of the scoring charts with five goals alongside Ross McCormack who got two more for Leeds against Palace. What a turnaround it is for McCormack whose first goal last season came on the penultimate Saturday when Leeds beat us 1-0.
Aaron McLean got his first goal of the season for Hull; his first of the season and the winner against his old club Peterborough. Matt Taylor was another to score against a former club, getting West Ham's first against Portsmouth but for his team mate Frederic Piquionne it wasn't quite as good a day as he saw red against his former club.
