Clean sheet for centurion Kiraly

He did so on a day when his former international goalkeeping colleague Marton Fulop had passed away at the age of 32 with the Hungarians all wearing black arm bands as a mark of respect for Fulop who himself played on 24 occasions for his country.

Kiraly had an outstanding game. He made a stunning save in the first three minutes and another crucial save close to the end of the game as they won the first leg 1-0 ahead of the home tie to be played at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Budapest in three days time.

Gabor, now 39, made his international bow against Austria in March 1998 in a friendly in Vienna, a game they lost 3-2 and you wonder just how many caps he might have totalled had he not signed for Burnley and been consigned to reserve team substitute for Diego Penny for a time.

He won his 70th cap in October but his 71st didn't come until March 2010 after he'd left us and moved to Germany with TSV Munich. Tonight was the 31st occasion he's kept a clean sheet for his country.

In an interview today he spoke about his wearing of track suit bottoms in games. "It's essentially a question of comfort," he said. "I've played on clay or grass that's been frozen in winter; it makes your legs hurt when you fall so jogging bottoms seemed obvious. I always take a size above to facilitate movement.

"I tried shorts during my spells in Germany and England but it didn't suit me. The end result is more important than your look."

Back playing with his home town club Szombatheyly Haladas, he'll be 40 next April but currently has no plans to quit. "I will stop when my body says stop," he said. "But not now."

No matter which country you play for and no matter which position you play on the pitch, it is a massive achievement to win 100 international caps.

I always felt he was unfairly treated at Burnley and would, given the opportunity, have gone on to be a very good goalkeeper for us.

Congratulations tonight to Hungary's Number One.

His latest cap has been added to the INTERNATIONALS feature.
