Claret turns to Gray

The Wolverhampton born 24-year-old, came through the Shrewsbury youth system so there is every chance I've seen him play down at Gawthorpe at some time in a Youth Alliance League fixture.

He did break into the first team there, but made only five substitute appearances before dropping into non-league football with Telford, Hinckley and then Luton and his last season at Luton was very much a success for both player and club.

He scored 30 goals in 44 appearances that season as the Hatters returned to the Football League but he wasn't to play a Football League game for them with Brentford, newly promoted to the Championship, paying a reported half a million for him.

He's scored 18 goals in 47 league games for Brentford and in the last couple of weeks it seems a lot of clubs have been more than interested in signing him. It's been reported that Hull couldn't fund the transfer, there was talk of West Ham and then a fee was agreed for him to go to Bristol City.

That fell through and it was really only in the last 24 hours or so that our interest went public, the very best way to do transfer business.

It's led to his signing this evening with manager Sean Dyche saying: "Andre is a player we have been aware of since his Hinckley Town days in non-league. My coach Tony Loughlan flagged him up there and we have watched his development. I am pleased to say that has gone very well so far.

"He has worked very, very hard to get to the level he's at. He has risen up the ladder and, in many ways, had a similar pathway to two former strikers here, Danny Ings and Charlie Austin.

"In that respect there is a rawness, a hunger and a great desire from him to continue his education and go even further, and we intend that to be with us in the immediacy and also in the future."

Gray said about becoming a Claret: "It was quite an easy decision in the end. As soon as Burnley's name came up I definitely wanted to speak to them and find out what they had to say. It was quite straight forward after that.

"I spoke to my agent and Mark Warburton and his assistant too. They have a good relationship with the gaffer, so I got another honest opinion from someone I trust and they sang the praises of Burnley Football Club and especially the manager.

"The gaffer was a massive influence. If you look at it, Danny Ings has one on and Charlie Austin has been involved with England. Then there's Jay Rodriguez, so the list goes on really and that's something I want to be a part of."

Gray is not expected to be involved tomorrow against his former club. The signing didn't go through in time, but he'll be ready to face Bristol City next Saturday at Ashton Gate.
