Carlisle set for Preston loan

Carlisle, who was left out of the side after the Bristol City defeat last season, wasn't at Altrincham today and is now in talks with Preston and their manager Phil Brown.

It looked initially as if he could join Preston on a permanent basis but it doesn't look as though that's going to be possible financially and he's expected to sign for them on a season long loan perhaps as early as Monday of next week.

He's been with Burnley for almost four years, has played over 150 times for us, but like Grezza before him he's not going to be first choice at Turf Moor with manager Eddie Howe looking to bring in younger players, and with potentially two young central defenders being targeted.

Carlisle signed a new contract in January 2011 and has one year remaining on that so any such loan would ensure his Burnley career was at an end.

Eddie Howe said on confirming the news: The clubs have agreed a deal and now it is up to Clarke to agree things with Preston.

"He has been a fantastic servant for the club and I can't speak highly enough about him as a player and a person. His attitude and commitment to the cause can never be questions and if he goes, he goes with our best wishes."
