Beeby back at Burnley

Last updated : 09 April 2007 By Tony Scholes
He'd already upset the Clarets before his game here last season against Millwall. Back in August 2004 he sent Steve Cotterill to the stands after the Burnley manager had lost it with him, he gave Gillingham a penalty, sent off Micah Hyde and also handed out no fewer than eight yellow cards.

That was nothing compared to that last visit last season when he created what surely is a Turf Moor record and sent off no fewer than four players.

The first to go was Millwall's Ben May, dismissed for racially abusing Frank Sinclair in the tunnel area, then Jody Morris and incredibly James O'Connor went after the Millwall player had fouled O'Connor (O'Connor's was rescinded on appeal), and at the end of the game he sent off Millwall keeper Andy Marshall and was prevented from getting at Marshall physically by one of his assistants.

He's not been back since, but our paths did cross at West Brom in November when he waved his red card again, this time at Frank Sinclair. In those three games he's handed out no fewer than twenty yellow cards and a staggering six red cards.

It's not just us, he's now hit three figures this season with yellow cards, no fewer than 104 in 35 games with 39 of them going to home players and 65 to away players. Frank Sinclair is one of nine players he's sent off. Seven of those players sent off have been away players. The most recent was Plymouth's Lilian Nalis at QPR and his performance that day was slammed by Plymouth boss Holloway.

I feared the worst with Nigel Miller on Saturday, but he had a good game, so maybe I'm worrying unduly. But recent evidence suggests this referee loves to court controversy and who knows what might happen.

He will be assisted by Carl Bassindale and David Storrie (both Yorkshire) and the fourth official will be Neil Yates (Lancashire). The last time Mr Yates was on fourth official duties at Turf Moor he ended the game in the middle, he replaced the injured Paul Robinson at half time. That was just over two seasons ago when goals from Tony Grant and Frank Sinclair gave us a 2-1 win over Rotherham.
