We're all going on a summer holiday

Wayne Thomas - Man of the Match
Just when you thought it was safe to go to a Burnley game again, we turned in as bad an effort as we've seen all season. In ninety minutes I cannot recall us troubling keeper Casper Ankergren once whilst at the other end it was a mistake by fellow Dane Brian Jensen that led to the only goal of the game and a lifeline for the Yorkshire side.

Jensen came for a corner, got nowhere near and when Matt Heath beat Michael Duff in the air it was an empty net he was aiming for. Jensen did it again a short while later but got away with it, although he did make one terrific save in between to keep out a header.

Say what you want about Leeds, say what you want about Elland Road, but there was a superb atmosphere in there yesterday. It is so unlike the sterile Turf Moor atmosphere, but they don't bother with cheerleaders and the likes, it is a throw back to old fashioned football where the atmosphere is generated, and allowed to generate, from the two sets of fans with a bit of hostility thrown in.

Burnley were unchanged both in team and kit selection. Steve Cotterill named the starting eleven that had won those three games, and finally we elected to wear claret and blue away from home, finally we elected to proudly wear our own club colours when we could have got away with playing in that hideous yellow thing.

Little did we know but that was to be just about the last positive of the afternoon as we failed to rise to the occasion and allowed the relegation strugglers to assume control from the off. David Healy got in the first shot of the game, but thankfully for us he was not at his best, whilst Richard Cresswell was just downright awful and Robbie Blake, booed constantly by the visiting section, presumably had elected to wear his diving boots.

We had enough of the ball in the opening exchanges but too often we conceded possession too easily and this allowed the home side to keep coming forward. If they were going to get in front against us it always looked as though it might be down their left where Eddie Lewis and their best player Michael Gray were causing us problems.

In effect that's what happened, and we ended the attack at the expense of a corner on the right win. Alan Thompson hit the flag kick to the far post where Matt Heath rose above Michael Duff to head home. There were suggestions that Jensen had been blocked by a Leeds player, but for me this was poor goalkeeping.

Leeds could have wrapped it up in the period after the goal. Frazer Richardson hit a screamer from some distance that fairly hammered the bar before flying over, and then Jensen did well to tip over a header from goalscorer Heath.

Meanwhile at the other end virtually nothing was happening and in that first half only a blocked effort from Wayne Thomas even came close to threatening the Leeds goal. Andy Gray, who had been back in form recently, looked way off the pace up front and Paul McVeigh was having his worst game in Burnley colours, whilst there was no real support from the midfield.

It really was a disappointing first half after the recent performances and results. No, it wasn't just disappointing, it was downright awful, and against a half decent side we would have already been heading home with a defeat.

I'd like to say the second half was much better, but sadly I can't. It was better, no doubt about that, and we dominated the play throughout. I'm sure the Leeds fans, scrapping for every point, would have been worried about an equaliser, but frankly it was never on the cards.

I cannot recall a single effort on goal that was worthy of the name, unless you consider the one from Wade Elliott that missed the woodwork by inches. That was the woodwork on the corner flag on our left wing as it went out for a throw in.

We made a couple of substitutions, Ade Akinbiyi did nothing, John Spicer's only real contribution was to waste an opportunity with a poor pass, but by the time they came on it was virtually all over and done with.

On the night we played Plymouth I was strangely confident simply because I thought they had nothing to play for, that they had probably got their cases packed for the summer. That from us yesterday looked as though we'd booked, packed and, well you know the rest.

I can only look at the central defenders for my choice as man of the match. They had Cresswell and Healy in their pockets, and although we conceded a goal for the first time since Preston there can be no criticism of their performances.

They both played well, but my choice is Wayne Thomas who is now showing the sort of form that persuaded Steve Cotterill to sign him two years ago. He's forming what could be a very formidable partnership with the new captain.

But overall we need to offer more than this, I know it was hot and summery yesterday, but get off the beach lads, we've four games still to play.
