It's Bury or Wigan for the Alliance title

Last updated : 15 April 2015 By Tony Scholes

Wigan won that game a week ago, but, as it stands right now, Bury lead Wigan by five points having completed their fixtures in the last five days with resounding 5-1 and 5-0 wins against Oldham and bottom club Morecambe.

Rochdale, who are currently second, but, like Bury, have played their last game, still could have a part to play. Wigan have two remaining games and need to win both to overhaul Bury. The first comes this Saturday when they host Preston, but they will end their season with an away game against Rochdale.

Having won a week ago at Bury, Wigan beat Accrington on Saturday to ensure their challenge continued. They've never been a club who were particularly strong at youth level but, given they are likely to be a League One club next season, a strong youth side might be more of a priority.

Meanwhile, bottom club Morecambe have avoided an unwanted ton but it was close. With two games remaining they had conceded no fewer than 90 goals. They were beaten 3-0 on Saturday by Port Vale before losing 5-0 to Bury today, leaving them with a total of 98 goals conceded, a figure much higher than any other side in the league.

They've ended the season with ten points, some 14 points behind next club Fleetwood who beat us at Gawthorpe last Saturday to record an eighth win of the season.

We will finish 9th or 10th, and that is dependent on Tranmere's game against Port Vale. Vale currently have one point less than us but a draw would take them above us on goal difference and a win would send them up four places to 6th.

Should we end the season in 9th place, it will match our 2013/14 finish, and that is lower than any other season since the change to the league structure in 2004.

All the results from the last week are below along with this Saturday's fixtures, Burnley's goalscorers and the current league table.

The player shown in this article is Waqas Azam, this season's youth team captain. He was released today after nine years at the club. I'd like to send him our best wishes and the hope that he can get fixed up elsewhere ahead of next season.
