Huddersfield hit for five

Shay McCartan scored the third goal

Gilchrist, one of four new scholars, had already netted four goals in three pre-season games and it didn't take him long to get off the mark in this one. With less than five minutes gone he'd scored twice, and both times his partner Shay McCartan was involved very much in the build up.

They looked sharp up front. Gilchrist certainly looks to have a goalscorer's touch and McCartan caused Huddersfield trouble all afternoon and he made run after run at their defence.

But this wasn't all about the strikers. We looked solid at the back, with the defence expertly marshalled by Tom Anderson, and had control of the midfield.

McCartan got on the scoresheet just before half time, but should have scored midway through the half. He was brought down after a trademark run for the clearest of penalties but he hit the spot kick wide of the right hand post.

It was 3-0 at half time and we started the second half in similar fashion. Just three minutes in the Huddersfield goalkeeper did well to deny Gilchrist a hat trick goal but Adam Evans was there to net from the rebound.

Gilchrist wasn't going to be denied and five minutes later we won a free kick around 25-yards out to the left. His free kick was just about perfect leaving the 'keeper with no chance.

Despite there being no further goal we continued to play some excellent football and such was the performance that the accolades from coaches Pashley and Farrell could be heard from the other side of the pitch.

They've got just one more game left now, at Preston next Tuesday, before the league season gets underway a week on Saturday at Morecambe.

Today's starting line up was: Josh Cook, Aryn Williams, Alex Coleman, Tom Anderson, Luke Conlan, Adam Evans, Alex Mullin, Archie Love, Connor Howieson, Shay McCartan, Jason Gilchrist.
