Clarets won't want to pay the penalty in youth cup tie

Jamie Frost scored in last season's tie

Seven times in the last ten seasons our exit from the competition has been via penalty shoot outs, starting with the one occasion when we reached the final in 2004/05. We led Swindon 1-0 through a Cayne Hanley goal only for them to equalise in stoppage time and then go on to win 5-3 on penalties with young substitute Lukas Jutkiewicz scoring one of their spot kicks.

The next two years were straight forward. In 2005/06 we reached the fourth round before losing 3-0 at home to Tranmere, and in 2006/07 Chris Anderson and Jay Rodriguez scored on a disastrous first round day at Stockport as we suffered a heavy 8-2 defeat.

Then the penalty shoot outs really kicked in. Anderson and James Craggs both scored in our home fourth round tie in 2007/08 against Hartlepool but again a late goal from the opposition on a very cold Gawthorpe day took it straight to penalties and we lost 5-4.

Oliver Devenney and Anderson, yet again, were on the mark at Shrewsbury in 2008/09. That was a 2-2 draw with the inevitable penalty defeat, this time 9-8.

It was a 0-0 home draw against Wigan in 2009/10, followed by a 3-1 penalty defeat, and in 2010/11 we were beaten 3-2 on penalties after another 0-0 draw against Wigan, this time away from home.

Adam Evans and Shay McCartan were the goalscorers in 2011/12 when we drew 2-2 at Notts County before losing 5-4 on penalties and a year later it looked very much as though there would be another shoot out as we went into stoppage time with goals from Luke Gallagher and Jason Gilchrist giving us a 2-2 home draw against Walsall. This time, alas, no penalties, with Walsall winning it 3-2 deep into stoppage time.

Last season was back to the old scenario of yet another 2-2 draw, this time away to champions elect Blackpool. Ntumba Massanka and Jamie Frost got the goals this time but we went down 4-2 in the shoot out.

I really hope Terry Pashley and Andy Farrell have been doing some penalty practice this week, just in case.

The Burnley team today can include Vashiko Dixon who was sent off against Morecambe at lyne-with-Hest two weeks ago. Unlike first team suspensions, they start 14 days after the offence and so he will start his suspension tomorrow, therefore being ineligible for next Saturday's home game against Shrewsbury.

The team today is: Tony Aghayere, Waqas Azam, Shaun Hobson, Lewis Norvock, Andy Nugent, Jamal Crawford, Hamam El-Fitouri, Andreas Bianga, Brad Jackson, Ntumba Massanka, Khius Metz. Subs: Callum O'Neill, Vashiko Dixon, Brandon Wilson, Christian Hill, Josh Dolling.

The game will be played at Rolls Royce Sports Ground, Barnoldswick, kicking off at 2 p.m.
