Clarets remain fifth in Alliance

A win could only ever see us move up one place, whilst a defeat could have seen us drop down as far as eighth place. That one position climb looked certain with Tranmere believed to have no game. However, they played at Port Vale and had a comfortable 6-1 win to further stretch the goal difference between us both.

Those other clubs below us, who could have moved ahead had we lost, all slipped up themselves. Bury were held to a draw by next to bottom of the league Morecambe. and Macclesfield were held by Wigan.

Oldham, the other side who could have gone above us, were involved in the biggest shock result of the day when they went down 1-0 at Accrington, giving Stanley their first win of the season and allowing them to move off the bottom and ahead of both Morecambe and Wrexham.

They were the only five games played this weekend, but there's a full fixture list this coming Saturday when Burnley face the tough task of a home game against leaders Preston North End.

We've already played the away game against Preston and went down to a 3-1 defeat at the beginning of September, our first defeat of the season.

That's our next game with this week's Lancashire FA Youth Cup tie against Accrington having been called off to allow Accrington to play their Johnstone Paints tie against Tranmere after it was abandoned last week because of the injury to Tom Bender.
