Burnley and Bury lead the way in youth league

There were no less than six teams on six points after the results a week ago but there of them - Stockport County, Tranmere Rovers and Walsall - were all without a game. That meant that Burnley, Bury and Preston had the chance to pull clear.

We did so in remarkable style, as reported over the weekend by Andy Ashworth, as we came from 3-0 down against Blackpool to win 4-3. Bury meanwhile followed us with a 2-1 home success against Rochdale.

Preston, however, slipped with a 2-2 draw at Oldham leaving them in third place, a couple of points behind.

They were three of just four games played; the other seeing last season's bottom club Carlisle record a massive 7-1 win over Morecambe.

That result means that Carlisle are now the league's leading goalscorers with 13 whilst those goals ensured that poor Morecambe, averaging more than 4 goals per game conceded, now have the worst defensive record.

It's a good start to the season for the young Clarets but we know how things can change in this league. In October last year it looked odds on that Blackpool would walk it, yet they finished the season in the bottom half after a disastrous run.

We're back in action this coming Saturday with a trip to Preston, this game kicking off at 10:30 a.m. rather than the usual 11:00 a.m.
