Who joins Shackell in the ten year defence?

Last updated : 09 June 2014 By Tony Scholes

There was more competition for the current captain than his team mates Tom Heaton, Kieran Trippier and Ben Mee faced with three other players collecting over ten per cent of the vote, including his partner last season Michael Duff.

Shackell still had just about twice as many votes as second place, winning with 45.2% of the vote with the two immediately behind him being players who debuted for the Clarets not too far short of ten years ago.

In second place was the only ex-Claret who has been selected in any of the international squads for the World Cup, Gary Cahill. He was on loan with us from Aston Villa during the 2004/05 season, making his debut in a League Cup tie against Spurs.

One of his central defensive partners from that team, Steve Cotterill's first signing as Burnley manager, was John McGreal and he came in third, Cahill winning 22.7% of the vote and McGreal picking up 13.6%.

Michael Duff, who has played for us throughout the entire ten years has just completed possibly his best season for us and he took fourth place with 12.3% of the vote.

The remaining 11 on the list all failed to even reach two percent and the two central defenders at Wembley five years ago, Steven Caldwell (1.9%) and Clarke Carlisle (1.2%) were the only ones to even pass one percent.

The remaining nine were Andre Bikey (0.8%), David Edgar and Kevin Long (0.4%), Leon Cort, Frank Sinclair, Wayne Thomas and David Unsworth (0.3%) and finally Keith Lowe and Stanislav Varga (0.1%).

Shackell, therefore, is the fourth player selected and until the end of Tuesday you have the opportunity to choose a central defender to play alongside him. All fourteen named above from the first vote who were behind Shackell in that vote are now available for you to choose from.

As always you can vote via the front page of the site or via the VOTING POLLS page.
