We turn to the midfield as Cahill completes the defence

He fought off a fight from Michael Duff to take the central defensive position alongside current captain Jason Shackell with John McGreal the only other real contender.

Cahill, who was with us for much of the 2004/05 season on loan from Aston Villa, clinched it with 36.3% of the vote, narrowly ahead of Duff who came in second with 30.5%. McGreal took third place having secured 23.6% of the vote but Steven Caldwell headed the rest with just a 3,4% return.

Behind him were Clarke Carlisle (2.0%), Andre Bikey and Frank Sinclair (0.8%), Kevin Long and Stanislav Varga (0.5%), David Edgar (0.4%), Leon Cort, Keith Lowe and Wayne Thomas (0.3%) and finally David Unsworth (0.1%).

That gives us, in front of goalkeeper Tom Heaton, a back four of Kieran Trippier, Gary Cahill, Jason Shackell and Ben Mee, so we now start selecting our midfield.

We start with the central midfield positions in our team, which will be in 4-4-2 formation, the one used currently by the Clarets. The voting will be carried out as it was for the central defensive positions and the first vote is now underway until the end of Friday.

There are sixteen players to choose from beginning with Tony Grant, signed from Manchester City by Stan Ternent in 2001 and who was with us for almost four years. He's followed by Richard Chaplow who made his Burnley debut towards the end of the 2002/03 season and became a million pound plus sale to West Brom in January 2005.

Seven of the next eight were signed by Steve Cotterill. We start with Micah Hyde and then James and Garreth O'Connor. They all made their debuts before the next candidate Chris McCann who, like Chaplow, came through the youth system.

More Cotterill signings followed with John Spicer, Alan Mahon, Joey Gudjonsson and Graham Alexander and they are followed by Kevin McDonald who was Owen Coyle's second permanent signing for Burnley.

There are five more. Jack Cork and Dean Marney were brought to Turf Moor by Brian Laws whilst Marvin Bartley and Brian Stock were brought to Burnley by Eddie Howe. Last but not least is David Jones who joined the Clarets last summer, brought in by Sean Dyche to replace the departed McCann.

Those are you choices, it's time to get voting. On Saturday the vote will be rerun without the winner to determine the second player to win a place in the centre of midfield.

As always you can vote via the front page of the site or the VOTING POLLS page.
