Shackell was some way behind Sam Vokes when the striker's season came to an end early in the last game in March against Leicester, and he needed to turn in some top performances to overhaul Sam for the title.
He crept closer and closer to Vokes and then capped that with another top performance in the last game at Reading which clinched the title for him.
He won the man of the match with 33.5% of the vote, just ahead of goalkeeper Tom Heaton who took second place with a 31.5% share. Midfielder Dean Marney was third with 10.7% closely beating Danny Ings who was fourth with a 10.1% share.
The same four players took the top four places in the player ratings too but with some swapping around. This time Heaton's rating of 8.24 out of 10 was enough to pip his captain who scored 8.20.
And it was a swap too for third and fourth places with Ings getting 7.84 to take third ahead of Marney whose rating was 7.32 out of 10.
Both Heaton and Shackell won eight points towards the player of the year with both Ings and Marney securing three points each.
Those points were enough to give Shackell the monthly win with 34 votes from the seven games played in April and May. They also ensured he beat Vokes by four points to become the Clarets Mad Player of the Year.
