It wasn't just his goals last Tuesday but his overall performance, probably as good as any he's given since making his Burnley debut in 2012, and it comfortably won him both the man of the match vote and the player ratings ahead of strike partner Sam Vokes.
The man of the match vote was no contest. Ings collected 62.7% of the vote and the highest since Charlie Austin polled 82.1% having scored a hat trick in a 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday.
No other player reached double figures but Vokes came second with 8.1%, Michael Duff was third with a 6.6% share and 6.1% of the vote gave Scott Arfield, who scored the second goal, fourth place.
Ings was again a clear winner in the player ratings. His rating of 8.90 out of 10 is the highest this season, just beating the 8.85 gained by Shackell in the 3-0 win at Derby.
Vokes was again second and had a rating of 8.03, just ahead of third place David Jones whose rating was 7.97. Shackell took fourth place with a rating of 7.69 out of 10.
Ings received the maximum ten points towards the Clarets Mad Player of the Year. Vokes collected six points, there were two each for Duff and Jones with both Arfield and Shackell winning one point.
That's seen Ings move into second place behind Shackell whose lead has been reduced to 17 points. Kieran Trippier is now third with Jones and Vokes in joint fourth place.
