I-I-Ashley-Ashley- Barnes scores our best goal

Last updated : 15 May 2014 By Tony Scholes

Questions were asked recently that the goal didn't land any of the goal of the season awards at the recent Supporters' Player of the Year Evening, but the only reason, I'm sure, is that the goal was scored after all the voting had been completed.

The goal won a place in the vote for the goal of the season after winning the last monthly vote comfortably and it is rightly at the top in the season vote.

It was not your typical Match of the Day sort of goal entry, a strike from considerable distance, but Barnes, the only player to be involved twice, was the finisher of a move that started with goalkeeper Tom Heaton and involved no fewer than eight of the team, only the two full backs and Jason Shackell not getting a touch.

There was some simply superb one-touch football involved with Barnes eventually volleying home a Dean Marney cross.

It polled 42.1% of the vote to win comfortably, and, it has to be said, against some very other top contenders.

Junior Stanislas scored what was within a few minutes of being the goal that finally ended the long run without a win against Blackburn. Again, with this goal, there was some terrific play before Stanislas shot into the bottom corner to send Turf Moor into raptures as we went 1-0 up in a game that ended 1-1.

That goal came second with 17.2% of the vote and Danny Ings, who had scored five of the nine contenders, polled 13.2% to take third place with the first in the home win against QPR that saw his link play with Sam Vokes at its very best, the reverse pass from Vokes being a real feature.

I voted for Barnes, but my choice before he scored that would have been for David Jones and that superb goal he scored off the underside of the bar against his former club Derby. It was his only league goal for the Clarets in his first season at Turf Moor. It gave us the lead in one of the most crucial games of the season with Derby set to go above us if they won.

The Jones goal secured 11.7% of the vote with the remaining five all receiving seven percent or fewer, and that included some very good goals as you will see from the list below.

Just now you can vote for what you thought was the best home performance of the season. There are fifteen games to select from, all of the home league wins during the season.

As always you can vote via the VOTING POLLS page or the front page of the site.
