Charlie again after Wednesday hat trick

Last updated : 10 October 2012 By Tony Scholes

It can't come as much of a surprise as Austin netted his second hat trick of the season yet still didn't end on the winning side as Wednesday three times came back to equalise and earn a draw.

His return of 82.1% of the man of the match vote is the highest this season by some considerable distance, beating his own previous record of 55.0% when he scored his first hat trick against Peterborough.

Such was his share of the vote that the rest of the players were just vying for position and it was goalkeeper Lee Grant who took second place with just 4.2% of the vote. Defenders Ben Mee (2.8%) and Michael Duff (2.1%) took the next two places.

The player ratings wasn't close either. Austin's rating of 9.49 out of 10 was the highest since Brian Jensen recorded 9.56 in our Premier League game at Chelsea in August 2009, and it was the goalkeeper again who came second with Grant recording a score of 7.61 out of 10.

Junior Stanislas, with 6.86, and Ben Mee, with 6.02, were third and fourth, the only two other players to have reached the six out of ten for an average performance.

The result of this game gives Austin, already in front, a further ten points towards the Clarets Mad Player of the Year with six points for Grant, three for Mee, two for Stanislas and one for Duff.

Those points succeed in pushing the top two further ahead. Austin is now way in front with 63 points, ahead of Grant who has 43 points. Dean Marney remains third with 30 points and Mee, with 21 points, has no pushed himself into fourth place.

The result from the Crystal Palace game will be published tomorrow and the next man of the match vote will start a week on Saturday within an hour of the final whistle of the Blackpool game.

Meanwhile, voting is underway for the September goal of the month with ten goals to select from. As always you can vote via the front page or the VOTING POLLS page.

Below is the result from last Tuesday's game and the current player of the year table.
