Arfield is season's first man of the match

Scott Arfield is the first winner of the season

Arfield turned in an excellent performance on his Premier League debut and scored what is, to date, our only goal in the league this season, finishing expertly with a volley from just inside the box at the cricket field end having received a cross from Matt Taylor.

Manager Sean Dyche highlighted his performance after the game, reminding us all that a year ago he was looking potentially at League One football after his release from Huddersfield. "We know he's got a goal in him and he was excellent all night tonight," Dyche said. "That will build belief in players that they can handle this."

Scott certainly handled the man of the match vote and the player ratings on Clarets Mad, winning both handsomely.

In our first Premier League man of the match vote since May 2010 for the 4-2 win against Spurs, won incidentally by Martin Paterson who made the reverse move to Huddersfield as Arfield was joining the Clarets a year ago, he won 61.0% of the vote which was more than double the 28.9% Michael Duff received to take second place.

With around 90% claimed by the top two it was scraps for the rest with debutant Lukas Jutkiewicz taking third place with a 3.4% share and Ben Mee finishing fourth with just 1.5% of the vote.

That same top three took the top three places in the player ratings too. Arfield was again a comfortable winner with a rating of 8.40 out of 10, while Duff and Jutkiewicz were the only other players to rate higher than seven out of then, Duff's rating was 7.58 with Jutkiewicz on 7.12.

Fourth place went to the other debutant in the starting line up Matt Taylor with a rating of 6.36 out of 10.

The top four players in each of the man of the match vote and the player ratings win points towards the Clarets Mad Player of the Year, the winner receiving five points with the next three winning three points, two points and one point respectively.

The first points for this season, therefore go to Arfield (10), Duff (6), Jutkiewicz (4) and both Mee and Taylor winning one point.

Voting is currently in progress for the Swansea game. You have until the end of Tuesday to cast your vote for the man of the match and leave your player ratings with it all transferring to the Capital One Cup game against Sheffield Weds on Wednesday.

You can vote for the man of the match via the front page or the VOTING POLLS page and the player ratings can be left at ELI'S MESSAGE BOARD.
