Profile by Tony Scholes

When Stan Ternent took over as Burnley manager in the summer of 1998 he surveyed his depleted squad and started the new season with just two new signings. One was Ronnie Jepson and the second was left back Steve Morgan who had been released by Wigan.

The first time I saw Morgan in action was at Halifax in a pre-season friendly and he didn't quite match the label of a fast, attacking full back. Indeed he struggled that afternoon and that was the case throughout his time at Burnley.

The Oldham born Morgan had started his career with Blackpool as a youngster and went through the youth and reserve teams to make a first team debut in a 1-1 home draw against Bolton in March 1986.

He went on to play over 150 games for the Seasiders but he was never popular with the crowd and as they slumped into the basement division under Jimmy Mullen in 1990 he was often made the scapegoat.

The fans often described him as lazy, but Blackpool nearly hit the jackpot in the summer of 1989 when First Division Wimbledon offered £300,000 for him. It was money Blackpool needed but Morgan couldn't agree terms with the London club and remained at Bloomfield Road for the relegation season.

One year on from that and he did make a move and signed for Plymouth for a fee less than £100,000. He had three successful years at Home Park before finally making it into the top flight when he signed for Coventry in 1993.

Three years there, including a loan with Bristol Rovers, were followed by two years at Wigan where he also had a loan with Ternent at Bury. Then came his move to Turf Moor which was hardly successful.

He was in the team at the start of the season and in total played 17 league games for us. That included a red card at Bournemouth and his last game, his parting shot, was the 6-0 home defeat to Manchester City. After that debacle, Ternent brought in Tom Cowan who replaced him immediately. I think it is fair to say that Steve Morgan never looked, during his season at Burnley, like a player who had graced the Premier League.

Released by Burnley he spent a season with Hull before signing for Halifax Town. He made his debut for them in September 2000, in a 2-1 win at Torquay, but it proved to be his only appearance and his last in professional football.
