Profile by Andy Ashworth

Making his league debut at the tender age of 16, Chester striker Painter was still early in his apprenticeship. He opening his league goalscoring account before signing professional terms as well and made over a hundred appearances in all competitions before moving on to Maidstone United for £30k at the start of the 91/92 season.

He had not even completed a full season with 'Stone before we swooped to bolster our forward line to aid our promotion push, shelling out £25k for the striker. Never the most prolific of strikers Painter struggled to impress the demanding Clarets fans. In his 18 or so months with us he made less than 40 appearances and scored 2 goals, both memorable in some way.

The first was a 16 second strike against Cardiff and the last, against Rochdale, wrote his name into the history books. The strike at Spotland was the final goal to be scored by anyone in the 4th division before the leagues were re-branded after the creation of the Premiership.

His lack of goals for us was in part due to the lack of football he managed in his 2nd season. He joined Darlington, initially on loan before a permanent £25k deal, as Christmas 1993 loomed. It was at Feethams where he found the regular football he craved and he paid the Quakers back, twice finishing as their top scorer and appearing nearly 130 times over a three year period.

He moved from Darlo to Rochdale, spending another three years as a regular and amassing an almost identical record over just under 130 games with just over 30 goals. His next move was to Halifax, spending 2 years at The Shay, before taking up a succession of short term deals in non-league football at Gateshead, Bradford PA, Ossett and Emley who were his last known club in 2004.
