Profile by Andy Ashworth

Williams began his career with Maltby Miners Welfare FC in a Northern Counties League. The scouts of Sheffield Wednesday must have spotted something in him and signed him up while they were a Premier League club.

He could be best described as an attacking midfielder, although he was far from prolific in front of goal. While with The Owls he had a series of loan spells with lower division clubs but also chalked up 23 Premier League appearances for the Hillsborough outfit.

Chris Waddle signed him on a free transfer and it was viewed by many as quite a coup - along with his other high profile signings. However, Williams never scaled anything like the dizzy heights we'd all hoped he would.

The moment he is most (in)famous for as far as Claret fans are concerned is his part in the York City game - his last for the club. After an inept 1st half display he made up the mind of Stan Ternent who, live on radio after the game, informed the listening audience that he was among 4 players who he wanted out of the club. Stan did say that with Williams it was 'to a lesser extent as he'll never win the fans over', but that may have just been done to soften the blow. He never played for us again.

Despite his availability he was not taken on until deadline day the following March, as Oxford beat off still competition from signed him up. He only played two games though before a free transfer move to Halifax. Again his stay was short, seeing him take in 3 league games and 2 cup games before he signed for Worksop in 2001.
